Guide:Introduction to Player versus Environment
Player versus Environment, also referred to as PvE and Player versus Monster, is a type of gameplay common to RPGs in general. This is where the character engages in combat with AI-controlled opponents (NPC's). This is a distinction from Player versus Player (PvP) where the player engages in combat with other players.
In Guild Wars, PvE content is available to role-playing characters. However, a PvP character can engage computer controlled opponents known as the Zaishen in tutorials, the Zaishen Challenge, and the Zaishen Elite. In PvE gameplay, the primary purpose is to complete the storyline by completing the objectives set by the mission or quest. In addition, PvE players can "grow" their characters, gain experience, learn skills, acquire better weapons and armor, and improve titles. This is done mainly by completing quests and missions, venturing into explorable areas to fight monsters, and farming.
There are currently 4 PvE chapters split into 3 campaigns and 1 expansion:
- Guild Wars: Prophecies
- Guild Wars: Factions
- Guild Wars: Nightfall
- Guild Wars: Eye of the North
These are commonly referred to as Prophecies (Proph), Factions, Nightfall (NF) and Eye of the North (EotN or GWEN) respectively.
Eye of the North is an expansion in contrast with the others. The campaigns can be played standalone whereas Eye of the North requires a campaign.
